I am not being unfair. I am simply restating exactly what was said on television BY the Obamas. IF they chose to state that they shared in each other's personal interests that would be a different story...however that is NOT what was said.

That's not even a "Dr. Phil" version. I think he would at least ask clarifying questions compared to what CNN did.

Well, I would argue that you're being slightly unfair. The concept is sound, and is very likely detailed in most all of the books you listed at the end of your post - show interest and invest some time in your spouse's hobbies and interests.

Watching it on the news, you're bound to get the oversimplified "Dr. Phil" version of the advice, so yes, it would sound quite inane to a reasonable person. And assuming this came from a sound bite from Michelle Obama, she's going to give a quick and moderately humorous answer to a question like that, as First Ladies do. However, every relationship self-help book, and all marriage counselors will tell you that this is important.

Of course, leave it to CNN to make this look like some sort of grand revelation imparted from the very lips of human wisdom. Morons.

Good grief, the perfect opportunity to make herself look good, give great advice, and really speak to the women of America and she blows it, sets us back to the freakin stone ages, and totally makes marriage one big joke in the process.

I really hope she is at least smart enough to monitor which shows those girls watch... even the morning preschool shows have to be picked through and rationed. Kids channels are not necessarily kid friendly - what a wasted opportunity. Once again I am greatly disappointed in the Obamas... why does this not surprise me?

since the time I made the page for Shane I had no idea how many children were going to be on my web-site, didn't really know I was making a site, I just wanted to remember these sweet angels that have gone too soon.

I would put forth that they are generally one in the same. For every time Palin is called Ava Perone, you have Fox (Hannity) calling Obama an "Uncle Tom" or heralding the tea bag protesters as heros for the modern society while calling gay rights activists "vile rapists of children and animals" (Bill O).

And as I've said many times before - modern media is owned and operated for profit. Their business is making money for investors, not reporting the truth. So long as that happens, we have no truth in media, nor a reasonable way to discern the truth from the exaggerations and opinions. Truthfully, what other sources of info do you have on events from the other side of the world? Not much. Internet chatter, occasionally a neutral reporter will say something. But we have no mechanism to separate the truth from the lies. Mixing liberal lies and conservative lies doesn't give you the truth. And face it, we don't have a good filter to separate the the truth from the lies. We can just do the best we can, but we have to realize that we don't know the truth.

Any argument that the prize was for Obama's accomplishments would be silly. The truth is that the prize is very international, with a strong western influence. This prize was not for Obama, it was for the American electorate.

We had a president who had put us in two wars, and was pushing for military action and even invasion in Iran, and strategic strikes against dozens of targets in N. Korea. There was even consideration about moving into Pakistan in specialized strikes. We then had the choice to continue these policies with McCain, who advocated and often joked about bombing Iran and wanted to destroy facilities in N. Korea, or Obama, who wanted to use diplomacy to attempt to solve these issues. Our election held the fate of policies and decisions of no less than 100 other countries. Most of the rest of the world was literally praying that we wouldn't chose a route that involved expanding our military actions and creating two more wars.

The American people chose the more diplomatic option (for better or worse), and decided to head off the inevitable course to larger wars. The representation of that decision was the election of Obama. Since the prize is given to individuals or small groups, he got it. Even he was absolutely floored and disagreed with it. It's asinine, yes, but that's what the committee decided to do. They do some strange things. Remember, they gave the prize to Yassir Arafat recently.

I can't believe this...and to think if she hadn't that little boy could have really been kidnapped, he could have been killed, he could have been used for child pornography. Why in the world, supposing ms drake HAD kidnapped the kid, would she take him to a safer place that same day? Why would she alert the school when the school had no clue to begin with? True, but the stink being raised about this speech really makes conservatives look hypocritical. They praised H.W. Bush and Reagan for such speeches in 1991 and 1988, and Reagan's speech was extremely partisan and political (inflammatory, in fact). Conservative families didn't pull their children from those events. In fact, they praised the event as something all presidents should do, and future leaders should follow the example.

Now, because the shoe is on the other political foot, it's now an imposition for the democratically elected leader of our nation to address our children. Why have the disruption? Why spend the money? Why take the time?

I would submit that your "entire district" would not have boycotted a similar speech by W. Bush, or McCain, had he won the election.

You know me well enough to know I would not hide my children from things like that. We've talked about it at home. Our entire district has more or less boycotted the speech. The administrators will watch it first and ONLY if it fits in to current curriculum will it be aired.

My sons will still be opted out. J for sure because he is so young. We would let B watch it if he wanted to, but even before we brought it up he said he didn't want to see it. He's the one that told us about it.

Any administration that would label parents who think they should have the right to hear or approve of something first as "silly" is not in the right (no pun intended). Any speech that was REWRITTEN (and it was) to remove the part about asking children to consider how they can SERVE the President has no place in a democratic country.

If other people wish to allow their children to listen to it, good for them...however I am defending my parental right to protect my children and give them our values.

If Bush would have wanted to do this, I would have opted out my children. I don't want politicians anywhere NEAR the delicate psyches of youth.

My thought is this - many presidents, congressmen, and senators have done similar speeches in the past, and no one really threw a fit then. In fact, before the Carter administration, these type of youth-directed speeches were quite normal. They were used to curtail the hippie movement in the 60's and ease civil unrest during the rights movements. They were peaceful discussions that encouraged thought and argued against irrational violence.

I would think the party of personal responsibility would use this as a opportunity for healthy debate. I'm not a parent myself, so my opinion means little here, but my thought would be to encourage my kids to listen carefully to what he had to say, then we'd discuss it later. Children are very impressionable, and are exposed to dozens of influences every day - from their parents and teachers, all the way down to the bus drivers and Wal-mart greeters. A presidential address will not be some sort of new influence that will hurt them any more than a classmate with an opposing viewpoint.

I probably would have quirked an eyebrow if Bush had done something like this, but I think that children should hear and discuss. Parents are going to have the strongest influence in something like this, and I think "hiding" them from it sets a bad example.

AMEN AMEN AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry but we can't pray in our schools, so what gives Obama the right to indoctrinate out children? You can say it's to encourage our children to stay in school all you want, I don't buy it, bolonga!!! That is our job as parents to encourage our children. My husband, his brother and boss, and most likely myself will be going to Washington DC to march against this ridiculous healthcare bill....All I can say is I truly believe these are end times and it's not going to get any easier at all unfortunately!
